“There were limitations and lots of NCAA rules, too many to keep track of, you had to be careful how you spent the money and kept track of all the receipts for what you purchased.”
Paul Raymond, Former Brown College Athlete
Paul Raymond lettered four years varsity football at Brown University, and ran track for two years, before going to the NFL for several years. After leaving professional football Paul worked as a school counselor teaching Math to students in Miami, and today is an MBA student at Yale University. ClassWallet caught up with Paul to ask him about his experiences with the expense management side of college sports, specifically the process when he hosted recruits at Brown and was given NCAA funds to manage.
Speaking about the process Raymond said, “When recruits came on campus you would have to hold on to receipts to return to coaches so they could reconcile. I recall coaches always having to get on us a week or two after the fact to try and find a particular receipt.” Raymond continues, “There were limitations and lots of NCAA rules, too many to keep track of. I had to be careful how I spent the money and keep track of all the receipts for what I purchased.” The coaches had to confirm that athletes weren’t spending on items that would incur penalties, as Raymond said, “It was a hassle.”
Asked what he thinks of the ClassWallet Digital Wallet +Debit Card for Coaches and Student Athlete, Raymond tells us, “I think it is definitely easier for an athlete to have an automated way to purchase items and an easy way to remit receipts electronically, like taking a picture of it using a smartphone. Especially, when out and about it is very easy to lose a receipt.” A problem when you have to be cognizant of all the many NCAA rules for which you don’t want to incur a penalty.
Raymond says that he enjoyed the ability to play with great teammates and host great recruits during his athletic career at Brown. His memories traveling with his teammates and playing together are memories that he still appreciates and holds dear to his heart.
Let the focus be on this and turn NCAA expense management into a cashless, paperless, automatically reconciled process and never again make the athletes save and remit paper receipts.
